Democratic lawmakers have signaled their intent to launch aggressive oversight actions should they regain control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming November midterm elections. Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has pledged to actively pursue inquiries into what he describes as the "Trump crime family," their business associates, and wealthy allies, while also raising questions about the conduct of Elon Musk during his time with the Department of Government Efficiency.
Garcia stated that his primary focus, if he were to set the committee's agenda, would be on the "Trump crime family." He emphasized that anyone connected to Trump or involved in American enterprise would be expected to answer to Congress. He accused Trump of committing "crimes" and "impeachable offenses," asserting that Democrats have a duty to build a case and present evidence.
During midterm campaign events, Democratic candidates, including Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff, are drawing contrasts between alleged self-dealing by the Trump family and the nation's affordability crisis, as they push to win majorities in both chambers of Congress. Reports have surfaced indicating that the Trump family earned at least $1 billion last year through various cryptocurrency ventures. Donors from the crypto and technology sectors, who have close ties to the first family, have gained access to the president, with some receiving legal relief, pardons, government contracts, or favorable policy changes. Garcia called the scale and scope of alleged corruption involving the Trump family and administration "outrageous."
Garcia also indicated he has numerous questions for Donald Trump Jr., including how certain companies backed by his investment firm secured multi-million-dollar Pentagon contracts, and why a Russian businessman spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to celebrate Trump Jr.'s wedding in the Bahamas. Reports note that shortly after Trump Jr.'s 1789 Capital invested in rare earth startup Vulcan Elements, the company received a $620 million loan from the Pentagon. Additionally, Unusual Machines, a drone company he supported, obtained military contracts. A spokesperson for Trump Jr. has consistently stated that he does not negotiate with the government on behalf of 1789 portfolio companies. Pentagon officials have maintained that no companies received preferential treatment and that external affiliations, investors, or political connections play no role in funding decisions.
The White House has countered that Democrats lack a real agenda to improve Americans' lives, offering only obstruction and baseless attacks on Trump's common-sense initiatives. They noted that Trump's stock portfolio is independently managed by third-party financial institutions, with all investment decisions made by independent managers, ensuring no conflicts of interest.
While Democrats remain in the minority, Garcia has already attempted to investigate Trump Jr., Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. All have denied any wrongdoing. Garcia stated that if Democrats take power, the House Oversight Committee would continue investigating the Jeffrey Epstein case, focus on alleged abuses involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security, and examine corporate practices that "prey on the American public."
He has also expressed interest in Trump's push to build a new White House ballroom, a triumphal arch, and renovate the Reflection Pool, and has "many questions" about Musk's conduct while leading the Department of Government Efficiency. While in the minority, Garcia and fellow Democrats previously sent letters to Chevron, ExxonMobil, and ConocoPhillips regarding their involvement in the White House's plan to control Venezuelan oil. Investigating donors for the Trump ballroom could also involve major U.S. corporations like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Palantir. Garcia said the committee must focus on the most serious corruption allegations and carefully prioritize its efforts.
Garcia, elected to Congress in 2022, quickly rose to become the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee. He immigrated to the United States from Peru as a child, became a citizen in his twenties, and was elected mayor of Long Beach, California, in 2014. He is the first openly gay immigrant member of Congress and displays a Superman portrait in his Washington office because he learned English from comic books. Some Democratic colleagues worry that pushing for impeachment could be a political misstep, distracting from the party's positive agenda. Garcia, however, argues that Democrats' first priority should be to "slow down and stop the Trump agenda," while healthcare and economic legislation are "someone else's job." He said, "My job is... to hold people accountable for injustice, crime, and corruption that are causing people to lose trust in government."
