While earlier industry discussions had contemplated the adoption of this solution in the Galaxy S26 lineup, considerations tied to pricing and related factors prompted Samsung to defer its use until the next-generation device family. According to insider reports, the MX division of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is currently conducting quality certification evaluations of Micron Technology's 1γ LPDDR5X memory, targeting deployment in the Galaxy S27 series slated to launch in the first half of next year.
The 1γ designation corresponds to the 1c DRAM process generation utilized by both Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and SK Hynix. As a reference point, the Galaxy S26 series models have employed a mixed sourcing strategy, combining Micron Technology's 1β LPDDR5X with LPDDR5X memory produced by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.'s DS division.
Given that Micron Technology's 1γ LPDDR5X has already entered mass production stages at other smartphone clients, Samsung's timeline appears comparatively delayed. In its financial disclosures, Micron Technology stated that 16Gb LPDDR5X modules built on the 1γ process have begun ramping into volume production at leading smartphone manufacturers, while 24Gb LPDDR5X variants based on the same technology are already being provided as samples.
Simultaneously, discussions regarding DRAM pricing for Galaxy devices slated for the fourth quarter of this year are underway between the two companies. While no concrete proposals have yet been exchanged, expectations suggest that Micron Technology's LPDDR5X quotations may come in higher than those from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.'s DS division. An individual familiar with the negotiation proceedings noted that, as discussions are still in their infancy, Micron Technology has yet to deliver its first formal offer. However, current indications point toward an opening position roughly 50% higher than Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.'s DS division pricing. With both parties aiming to reach an agreement before the mid-autumn holiday, the considerable gap between the two positions suggests the negotiation process will not be trouble-free.
