U.S. retail sales rose more than projected in August, with increases observed across most categories, signaling continued strength in consumer spending. Data from the Census Bureau released Wednesday showed a 1.2% month-over-month gain in retail purchases, following a downwardly revised 0.5% drop in July. The median estimate from economists surveyed by media had anticipated a 0.8% increase. Excluding automobiles and gasoline, retail sales also climbed 1.2%. These figures are not adjusted for inflation.
