Daxing Airport's Terminal Forecourt Glows Brighter Following a 180-Day Seamless Upgrade

Beijing Daxing International Airport has recently completed a power capacity expansion project in the area directly in front of its terminal building. This initiative, commissioned by Daxing Airport and executed by the Beijing Construction Project Management Headquarters, stands out as a unique "non-stop operation" construction endeavor carried out at an airport handling over 50 million passengers annually. The work zone, located before the terminal, is characterized by heavy daily passenger traffic and a dense network of underground utilities.

Throughout the 180-day construction period, the management team employed meticulous construction scheduling and flexible multi-party collaboration to ensure that traffic flow and passenger travel remained largely unaffected. A key objective was to enhance nighttime conditions, and the project successfully addressed a pre-existing lack of lighting on the east and west ramps leading to the terminal. Previously, vehicles traversing these ramps, especially the 220-meter eastern and 400-meter western curved sections, had to rely solely on their own headlights in the dark.

The renovation introduced new streetlights to these previously unlit areas, effectively filling the illumination gap. Building on this, the project management team optimized the entire lighting system further. After studying the construction blueprints, they identified that the original design shared cable routes between the lighting and other power systems. This prompted an on-site survey and comparative analysis, leading to a proposal for dedicated lighting distribution boxes and exclusive power supply routes. This adjustment achieved physical isolation between the lighting and other electrical systems, thereby reducing the risk of power failures. Operationally, it enables independent maintenance and testing without disrupting other systems, and from a construction perspective, it eliminated the need for two cable pits and five brick-built hand-holes, reducing pipeline installation and road-breaking work, which saved on project investment.

For guiding passenger movement, the team implemented glowing floor markers and temporary illuminated indicator strips for construction zones, offering clear directional cues at night. Construction barriers were set up in segments along the central and inner lanes, accompanied by additional safety signs for passengers. In high-traffic areas, personnel were stationed to guide pedestrians around the barriers. The primary challenges were the need to keep traffic moving and the complexity of the underground utilities, which led the team to adopt a phased, zoned construction strategy.

Materials were processed off-site as much as possible, favoring prefabrication over on-site casting to minimize work duration. Lane work was sequenced to avoid blocking traffic, with each lane handled individually. High-noise tasks were reserved for late-night hours with fewer flights, employing quiet hydraulic saws, low-noise machinery, and soundproofing enclosures for cutting operations. Dust-generating work used vacuum-assisted cutting with water mist suppression. Different barrier materials were selected based on the area to minimize visual impact on passengers. Throughout the project, the management team maintained close coordination with operations and maintenance units, dynamically adjusting work schedules in response to flight and passenger flow.

A collaborative coordination mechanism involving the headquarters, Daxing Airport, and contractors was established from the start. Party member demonstration posts were created, with party cadres taking on specific responsibilities in schedule coordination, plan optimization, and emergency response. A "Party Building + Safety" campaign featured a production safety month with on-site inspections of flood prevention and electrical safety, along with safety knowledge questionnaires and case analysis to bolster awareness among all workers. The third party branch of the headquarters, responsible for the project, signed integrity commitment agreements with contractors and conducted regular integrity education to weave this culture into every phase of the construction. This power expansion project has laid the groundwork for future capacity growth at the terminal, improved the lighting on the east and west ramps, and enhanced the ease of electrical maintenance, ensuring the airport's continued efficient operation.
