Ahead of the crucial holiday shopping rush, the US-based e-commerce behemoth Amazon.com has announced it will lift the starting hourly wage for its full-time US core operations employees to $20. This move is designed to bolster its workforce during the peak season.

Effective from September 27th, workers in roles such as packing and shipping will see an additional $1 added to their hourly pay, bringing the average hourly rate to nearly $24. The company also highlighted that, when factoring in benefits, the total average compensation for these employees will exceed $32 per hour.

Furthermore, Amazon.com introduced new perks for its staff starting October 1st. Employees will receive a 10% discount on eligible fresh groceries and everyday essentials purchased through online platforms like Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market. In addition, they will enjoy a 20% discount on in-store purchases at Whole Foods physical locations. These new discounts are designed to be used in conjunction with existing Prime member benefits, according to the retailer.

In a separate initiative slated to launch later this year, Amazon.com will provide eligible employees and their families with access to First Tech Federal Credit Union. This membership offers low-fee, lifelong banking services, including accounts with no overdraft fees and no monthly maintenance charges. The company noted that opening checking and savings accounts will not require a credit history, making it accessible to a broader range of staff.
