A company that once built its reputation on solar panel manufacturing gear is now betting heavily on machines that produce the optical engines powering artificial intelligence data centers. The real question for investors is no longer whether the AI hardware market is growing, but whether this strategic shift can fundamentally transform the company's profit model. Robotechnik Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., which is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's ChiNext board, has recently passed a hearing before the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, clearing a major hurdle toward launching a dual "A+H" capital platform.
Founded in 2011 as a veteran player in China's solar automation equipment sector, the company has seen its traditional business revenue decline sharply as the photovoltaic industry entered a period of severe overcapacity. At the same time, after years of strategic positioning, the company completed a full acquisition of German silicon photonics equipment maker ficonTEC, extending its reach into high-speed optical communications, silicon photonic chips, and co-packaged optics — all areas tightly linked to AI infrastructure. The company now faces a stark contrast: the pain of a solar market downturn versus the promise of a silicon photonics boom, raising the question of whether it can rebuild earnings resilience and break through in the AI-era semiconductor equipment wave.
Dual Business Pivot: Solar Pressured, Silicon Photonics Accelerating
Robotechnik started with photovoltaic intelligent manufacturing equipment, offering automated solar cell production systems, full production line solutions, and intelligent manufacturing software built on its R2Fab MES platform, primarily serving downstream solar cell manufacturers. According to CIC data, the company ranked fifth globally in the intelligent solar cell automation equipment market by 2025 revenue, holding roughly a 2.6% market share.
However, the global solar industry's overcapacity and softening demand have weighed heavily on this segment. Revenue from solar equipment plunged from RMB 1.49 billion in 2023 to RMB 433 million in 2025, while automated equipment unit sales collapsed from 1,932 units to just 110 units — making it the primary drag on the company's overall results. Despite the volume decline, average selling prices for solar equipment actually climbed, from RMB 749,000 per unit in 2023 to RMB 1.302 million per unit in 2025, largely due to a higher share of revenue coming from overseas markets, particularly India, where pricing power is stronger and partially offsets the shrinking domestic demand.
To smooth out the volatility of solar cycles, the company is also promoting higher-value equipment upgrade and retrofit projects while expanding into emerging overseas markets. Its downstream customers are primarily leading global players in data communications and telecommunications, benefiting from the explosive demand for high-speed optical interconnects driven by AI computing expansion.
By 2025 revenue, the company ranked first globally in the silicon photonics intelligent manufacturing equipment market with a 20.5% share — a technological barrier and industry position far stronger than its solar business. Revenue from silicon photonics reached RMB 439 million in 2025, accounting for 46.3% of total revenue, nearly matching the solar segment. By the first four months of 2026, silicon photonics revenue share had climbed further to 65.8%, making it the company's largest revenue source. In the first half of 2026, silicon photonics revenue surged 952.2% year-over-year, entering a phase of mass production and delivery.
On the technology front, both businesses share three core capabilities: motion control, machine vision, and software factory integration. Machine vision platforms developed in the solar business, such as Robo Vision and Robo DeepVision, can be reused in silicon photonics equipment, replacing third-party software and lowering licensing costs. Conversely, the nanometer-level high-precision motion control technology and PCM software from the silicon photonics business can enhance solar equipment's control accuracy, creating a two-way synergy. Yet it is worth noting that the two businesses differ substantially in market logic, cost structures, customer profiles, and supply chains. Solar customers are concentrated in mainland China and India, favoring standardized equipment and bearing heavy industry cycle risk; silicon photonics customers are global, demand customized equipment, and face rapid technology iteration but offer stronger growth visibility.
Integration of ficonTEC remains at an early stage. Synergies in supply chains, sales channels, and product R&D have not been fully realized, and some silicon photonics projects are still in production testing without reaching revenue recognition milestones. In the near term, the company faces long delivery cycles and high fixed costs. Meanwhile, the company's controlling shareholder, Mr. Dai, has provided a performance guarantee for ficonTEC requiring cumulative net profit of no less than EUR 58.1 million from 2025 to 2027, with a compensation cap of RMB 1.012 billion. While this provides some downside protection on acquisition risk, whether the performance commitment is ultimately met remains uncertain.
Volume Growth of Silicon Photonics Drives Earnings Recovery, But Multiple Challenges Remain
Financially, the company recorded net profits of RMB 79.5 million in 2023 and RMB 63.2 million in 2024, maintaining profitability. In 2025, however, the combined impact of a deep solar industry correction, intangible asset amortization from the ficonTEC acquisition, and higher operating costs produced a full-year net loss of RMB 45 million. The core driver was mass production and delivery of silicon photonics equipment, lifting both revenue and gross profit. Cash flow presents a different challenge. The company's cash conversion cycle stretched from 156 days in 2023 to 406 days in 2025, and further to 580 days in the first four months of 2026, pressured by slower receivables collection in the solar business and extended customer acceptance timelines. The silicon photonics business, by contrast, has a shorter cash cycle and benefits from sizable contract prepayments. As its revenue share grows, overall cash flow is likely to improve gradually, but working capital pressure remains in the near term.
Customer concentration is another notable feature. The top five customers accounted for 63.2% of revenue in 2025. As the business shifts toward silicon photonics, the customer base is transitioning from solar manufacturers to data communications technology firms, whose orders are larger and acceptance cycles longer. This shift brings both growth opportunities and concentration risks. The Hong Kong listing proceeds are earmarked for five main areas: product technology R&D, capacity expansion, global sales and service network construction, strategic investments, and working capital replenishment — with the core focus on doubling down on silicon photonics to address the AI-driven surge in demand.
Looking at the industry outlook, the global silicon photonics intelligent manufacturing equipment market is in a high-growth phase. The market was worth approximately RMB 3 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach RMB 26.6 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 54.9%. The commercial penetration of technologies like CPO and OCS will continue to generate equipment demand, and as the global leader, the company is well positioned to benefit. Meanwhile, after capacity rationalization in the solar industry, a gradual recovery is expected from 2027 onward, which could also provide earnings upside.
Risk factors deserve close attention. The solar business remains in a downward cycle, with further losses expected in 2026; a slower-than-expected industry recovery would continue to weigh on overall performance. While the silicon photonics industry is growing quickly, it features diverse technology routes and rapid iteration. A misjudgment of downstream technology trends or failure to maintain a technological edge could result in market share losses.
