The Federal Reserve delivered a 25 basis point rate hike, lifting the federal funds rate target range to 3.75%-4.00%, marking the first increase since July 2023 and aligning with market consensus after five consecutive meetings of holding policy steady.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) passed the resolution unanimously with a 12-0 vote, while the latest dot plot revealed a median federal funds rate projection of 4.1% by the end of 2026, up from the 3.8% forecast in June, with 16 officials anticipating at least one additional rate increase within the year.

The policy statement characterized economic activity as expanding at a solid pace with robust productivity growth, though inflation remains persistently elevated. According to the FOMC economic projections, one more rate increase is expected in 2026, followed by steady rates through 2027, before easing begins in 2028 and settles in the 3.5% to 3.75% range by 2029.

On the inflation front, the PCE projection for 2026 stands at 3.7%, with the return to the 2% target now pushed out to 2029. Growth forecasts were revised upward, with U.S. economic expansion projected at 2.3%, 2.4%, and 2.2% for 2026 through 2028 respectively, while the 2026 unemployment rate outlook was significantly revised down to approximately 4.1%.

Outlook and Strategy Considerations

Gold maintains a neutral stance as the Fed meeting outcome has been digested, though official commentary and the dot plot signal a notably hawkish tilt. With market risk sentiment beginning to build, demand for gold as an investment may soften somewhat, suggesting prices are likely to trade in a sideways consolidation pattern in the near term. The Au2610 contract is expected to fluctuate within the 930 yuan per gram to 960 yuan per gram range.

Silver likewise carries a neutral outlook, with fundamentals mirroring those of gold. Prices are projected to maintain a consolidation pattern, with the Ag2610 contract range set between 15,000 yuan per kilogram and 16,000 yuan per kilogram.

Arbitrage opportunities remain on hold for now, as do options strategies. Key risks to monitor include overseas liquidity concerns and the continued exit of speculative positioning from the market.
