Exxon Mobil (XOM) won approval for its Rose carbon-capture project in Texas, allowing the company to move forward with the development, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

The Railroad Commission of Texas approved a permit allowing ExxonMobil to inject up to 53 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 13 years, the report said.

The carbon dioxide would be stored permanently in rock formations about one mile underground, according to the report. Two commissioners voted for the permit and one against, Bloomberg reported.

Commissioner Wayne Christian, who voted against the permit, said he remained unconvinced that the record adequately established the project's long-term safety and questioned the need to permanently inject carbon dioxide underground, according to a statement.

Exxon Mobil did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
