Qantas Airways (ASX:QAN) and Virgin Australia (ASX:VGN) are supporting a plan to shut Sydney Airport's control tower during overnight hours as a way to redeploy air traffic controllers to busier daytime periods, to solve the staffing shortage that has been disrupting flights and raising safety concerns, according to a Friday report by the Australian Financial Review.

Closing the tower at night would release two controllers who could be reassigned to peak-hour shifts, the report said.

In an email seen by the AFR, Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority confirmed that Airservices Australia is exploring a temporary change to overnight operating hours at the Sydney control tower.
